Two National Guard soldiers were shot in a targeted attack near the White House on Wednesday. His condition remains critical.
The attack occurred around 2:15 p.m. in a densely populated area near the Farragut Metro stop, just a few blocks from the White House.
Law enforcement officials described the attack as an ambush and said 10 to 15 bullets were fired.
According to Jeff Carroll, acting assistant chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, National Guard troops were on “high visibility patrol” when the suspect walked around a corner, raised a gun, and then shot two soldiers.
According to CBS News, Carroll said, “We have reviewed video from the area. It appears, as I said, there was a lone gunman who raised a gun and ambushed these National Guard members, and he was immediately taken into custody by other National Guard members and law enforcement members.”
After the shots were fired, other National Guard members were able to run to their colleagues, Carroll said.
“There were other National Guard members in the area as well. After a brief chase they were able to subdue the individual and bring him into custody,” Carroll said.
Carroll said no other people are suspected in the attack and authorities are investigating all aspects of the suspect and his possible connections.
This is a developing story.
