Badulla was worst hit, with the highest number of deaths and about 16 people buried alive when mountain slopes collapsed on their homes, according to a statement from the Disaster Management Centre.
Rescue efforts by the army and police are ongoing, with boats, helicopters and vehicles being deployed to reach stranded or missing people.
