Trump defended his proposed peace plan for Ukraine on Sunday, saying the Russia-Ukraine war was the result of weak leadership in Washington and Kiev — and insisting that conflict “would never happen” under strong leadership.
US President Donald Trump, facing criticism from Kiev over his proposed peace plan, said the Russia-Ukraine war was the result of weak leadership in Washington and Kiev, arguing that the conflict “would never have happened” under stronger management.
“The war between Russia and Ukraine is a violent and terrible war that would never have happened with strong and reasonable American and Ukrainian leadership. It began during the Sleepy Joe Biden administration, long before I took office for a second term, and has only gotten worse,” Trump wrote on social media.
The Russia–Ukraine crisis began in 2014, when mass protests in Kiev ousted President Viktor Yanukovych from power, after which Russia annexed Crimea following a disputed referendum. Soon after, fighting broke out between Ukrainian forces and Moscow-backed separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk. Despite efforts at peace through the Minsk Agreements, clashes continued. The conflict escalated dramatically in February 2022 when Russia launched a full-scale invasion, turning the situation into a long and brutal war.
Trump was not in office during the 2014 annexation or the 2022 invasion; He won the presidency in 2016 and dropped out in 2020.
In his latest remarks, Trump reiterated his long-standing claim that Joe Biden’s “weak leadership” emboldened Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Putin would never have attacked! It was only when he saw Sleepy Joe in action that he said, ‘Now’s my chance!’ The rest is history, and it continues. “I have inherited a war that should never have happened, a war that is lost for everyone, especially for the millions who died needlessly,” he wrote.
Trump also criticized European countries for continuing to buy Russian oil and argued that such purchases undermine sanctions intended to pressure Moscow. He further claimed that Ukraine has shown “zero gratitude” for American efforts.
“The Ukraine ‘leadership’ has shown zero gratitude for our efforts, and Europe continues to buy oil from Russia. The United States continues to sell massive amounts of weapons to NATO, for distribution to Ukraine (Crooked Joe gave everything, free, free, free, including ‘big’ money!),” he said, accusing Biden of sending billions of US military aid to Kiev.
